People don't explain meditation well
You always hear meditation is about clearing your mind, but that's not really true. Which technique you're trying is important to give more useful answer but if you're watching your breath then your job is to watch your breath, then you'll think something, then you notice you're thinking and you return your focus to your breath. Then you'll notice you're thinking, and you return your focus to your breath.
If you're doing mindfulness meditation, then you notice your thought and say "next" to allow the next thought in. You notice that next thought and say "next" to allow the next thought in... What you don't do is have one thought and then continue thinking that same train of thoughts, for example "what's for dinner? well I could cook a stir fry. what vegetables do I have?..." When you do this, stop and let that go, to allow in the next thought like you're watching them instead of joining your thoughts and adding to what pops into your head.
Most importantly you just keep working at it.

You should first try to limit internet use and cell phone use for a few days. That will DEFINITELY help with the meditation. The most important thing to meditation is not learning about how to do it, but actually doing it. Actually sitting still and focusing on something in the present. Like your breathing or feeling of sitting down with whatever is contacting the earth.
Shaving or Driving a car feels very natural but at first it was not. You get use to doing it, especially if it's a routine.
Meditation will be the same way, just stick with it and calm your mind.
