Not for lay practitioners, no.

However, depending on which country people live in, their might be cultural inequalites of some kind which have nothing to do with Buddhism itself.

Just sharing . in my current understanding of Buddhism , all being ( living or non-living ) is of same & equal . I am of the same and equal with any animal , tree , virus or even all non-living like rock , rubbish .

I would agree. A similar thought is expressed by Paul who says, ''there is neither male nor female in Christ Jesus''.
