You can start by mastering the padmasana or the lotus position. Even if you are not able to meditate, simply practice sitting in this position for long hours with alertness. You will find that your mind starts calming down and getting more peaceful and positively energized.
As Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says," Sit in an asana and you see that clarity comes right away. Effect of asana is that it clears out all conflicts, dualities."
This is one of the foundational basics you have to master for practicing meditation for a longer time.
The chin mudra can also be practiced gradually in this regard.Holding the thumb and forefinger together lightly and having three remaining fingers extended is Chin Mudra. It is also called gyan mudra. This positioning of the fingers tends to relax the mind, and deepen meditation.
It is not mandatory for all to practice padmasana and other asanas, if they are
comfortable meditating sitting or standing or walking or in any other postures.
The asanas are but an aid to deepen meditation.
