Music for rejects
When I was a teenager I was one of the unpopular, rebellious kids. While everyone else was listening to the top 40, we were listening to bands like Slayer, which is fairly popular now, but in my day you'd get jumped by a gang of jocks for wearing a Slayer shirt.
From what I've heard, rap is the new rebellious music for teens. Is that true? What do the non-conformist teenagers listen to these days?

That's tough stuff, I've only ever listened to Cemetery Gates and quite like it. "Non-conformist" kids today are very hard to find. Trends spread very, very quickly. The emo trend used to be "non-conformist" but now they're everywhere, so I guess that's ruled out. Same with the gothic and metal subgenres.
What teenagers really consider non-conformist nowadays is Underground Music --- The really independent ones that haven't signed up for any record labels. Of course there are still very good mainstream ones (the ones I listen to lol) that these teenagers listen to but it's more "non-conformist" to listen to the Underground stuff. The good thing was when I was a teenager, what was mainstream in other countries was hardly known to mine so the stuff I listened to was pretty much considered underground.

Thanks for replying! I didn't know about Underground. Is there a particular style or is it just unsigned music? There's so many bands like that.

Nope! Any style will do; Underground can be hiphop, techno, rock etc, as long as it's unsigned. Generally with rock music you'll notice less effects, less synchronizers, if anything it's gonna be from a multi-effect keyboard. So yup independent artists :))

Heck I'm an independent artist, I should get into that scene.
Thanks for sharing!

Thought about it but like most artists I'm self-conscious. ![Confused1](https://www.spiritualforums.com/vb/images/smilies/smiles1/confused1.gif) I just started learned to produce music pretty recently, but I'll probably put something up soon.

The trouble with non-conformist "movements" is that as soon as they get established, they're not non-conformist anymore.

When you're non-comformist by nature it shouldn't matter. Fads come and go.
