Yes, I did notice the last line, and as you say, we can only go by what seems sensible.
Regarding the ego, we could consider ego on different levels.
Maybe for some there is ego as identification with a particular physical form. Which might explain why after death some people cannot believe that they have physically died because as far as they are concerned they are still very much alive.
And there is ego as identification with personality, with all its limitations and idiosyncrasies. So perhaps the question is, what remains of personality after the physical body has died? Because the personality is surely more than just the physical body. And if personality survives physical death (even if only for a certain period), then presumably something of the ego must remain.
Or there is Ego as individualised consciousness, the awareness of oneself as a separate entity. For me, it is this Ego or individualised consciousness which incarnates into form and a new personality, and continues to exist after the personality has been discarded on the astral and mental planes as part of the death process.
We each find an explanation of the afterlife which makes most sense to us.
