In spirituality you are your own boss. This is not true in religion.

Why so?

Beliefs linked to spirituality are able to be followed in whatever way one chooses, would you not agree?

Mainstream religion (which I presume is meant by 'religion') tends to be formulaic, ritualised, prescriptive. Expectation of certain behaviour and the acceptance of taught beliefs is the norm.

Spirituality isn't governed in such ways. You do, or don't do, whatever you choose - not what someone has determined....

I'm playing Devil's Advocate here as I adhere neither to personal beliefs nor mainstream religion.

What about the 'higher self' or the 'universal oneness', they are above the individual practitioner.
And what about religions that have no central authority..?

''Higher'' self already implies a separation between high and low, so not one self but more.. The higher self, is, like God, something we seemingly are not aware of normally, something above the ''lower nature'', and we need to do practices or get a special experience to know it. It doesn't sound that much different from a baptism or a meditation on Krishna.

"And what about religions that have no central authority..?" As that of Modern Spiritualism, my own persuasion....

The same level of personal freedom as suggested earlier for spirituality - similar sounding words, I concede, but definitely not the same subject.

The higher self is real you. The lower self is an illusion in your mind.

I mean the higher self is not above you.

There is really nothing to add. OK I give up I'm tired

Sorry dude.

EDIT: Your higher self is like your best friend. Better than that it is you.

Don't worry 3D I know what you mean. I understand the principle of the higher self now.
