Well, yeah, honey - if you can get to 'that point' through all the thoughts and emotions of pain,
anxiety, lost dreams, shame and jealousy --- sure.
Meditation can be an extremely difficult thing for wounded people.
Just sayin'.

The noticing of the breath is not particularly difficult for any person, and greg, may I say that the simplicity of your approach seems most suitable to you, and you are making the best possible approach, so continue as you are.
