Insect or not
Many many years ago I saw something that I've always wondered about. I remember asking a plant expert and also trying to look up the info and never found an answer.
It was near dusk and I lived next to a park that had lots of large established evergreen trees - I noticed that there was something spiraling from the top (if I remember correctly it was in a spiraling pattern?) and it was coming from many of the tops of the same type of trees. I also thought maybe it was pollen from the trees somehow rising - or insects as that would be the most logical thought. Has anyone seen anything similar or knows what it may have been?
Thanks

It's a fascinating question and must've been quite weird and surreal to see something inexplicable like that, journeyofone (cool username btw)~I grew up in northcentral PA and have seen a few pine trees lol. I never saw anything like that, though. I'm very intrigued and would love to know what it is you saw that night. It's probably difficult to further describe it since it was close to being dark. I was thinking maybe it was a spiritual thing.

If you've ever seen bats at night, they will tend to fly in a circular pattern to get insects before moving on. Maybe that's what you saw? If the light is good enough and the bats are low enough, you can see their wings and they almost look like birds, but they don't fly away like birds do. They fly around and around in the same place for a bit before flying off.

I have never thought of bats before...don't think it was though as the light was still good and I'm sure I would have noticed them. I'm pretty sure the trees were western red cedars. I guess I will never know for sure but it definitely was kind of surreal. My Mom was with me and she saw it too.
