You have to be careful with this practice, not that I've done it, because some authorites consider it to be theft, to take food from bins. So it's not worth it in my opinion.

It does though bring an interesting reminder about how much waste supermarkets create, that can go into landfill sites.

Definitely, I don't think it's right they're throwing away so much food and they lock up all the bins these days so people who might need it don't have access.

It is terribly sad, I agree.
I bought tomatoes which had a 'use by' date on them only 4 days further on. Over 1 week later those tomatoes were perfectly good to eat, but if they hadn't been bought, they would have ended up binned....and there are hundreds of other examples. Root veg for instance will keep for absolutely ages in cool dry dark conditions.
The only possible dangerous things would be meat, fish, soft cheeses, cans past their date etc.

But we live in a litiginous society, so I guess the stores keep a tight rein on their bins in case someone got food poisoning and blamed it on the store's produce. Something like that might be the reason their guard their bins so tightly.
But so much good food is wasted needlessly. It's appalling.

What is slightly annoying is that the store could sell all this stuff off under half price or really dirt-cheap on its last day -but they don't. Any 'reduced price' offers are not usually enough of a price reduction.

They should create a legal loophole where food given away freely after use-by date or extremely reduced is not allowed to be sued or taken to court over it. Basically it's the person's own responsibility what happens to them, as it would've been in the days back when everyone used to make their own food.

But of course we know they won't do that. Corporations love their money and power trips. They are not concerned for people, they only care about themselves.

Iv never heard the term 'Freeganism' but reading the comments it seems like eating good food that the super markets throw out? They throw out alot, iv also heard of massive amounts of good food being left out in the middle of no were i mean mountain piles so they can keep the prices up on the foods. Theres no lack of food on this planet, it's terrible some people are starving an dieing out there because rich business men an women want to make money.

your idea sounds good btw.
