There are many good books on Tarot out there.
You could start by searching for ones by Rachel Pollack.

I think it's all relative - you'll find a book that is good for YOU :)

I have a pretty straight-talking approach to Tarot, and go off Paul Fenton-Smith's books.

There are good books out there, but I never used a book. I think one should find their own individual meaning of each card. I definitely wouldn't trust the little booklet that comes with each set.

My most influential books are Gail Fairfield's book on "choice-centered" Tarot, she takes sort of a numerology approach with it. Very good in my opinion.

Paul Foster Case "tarot" is good also, as it follows more of a Kabbalah key understanding (hebrew alphabet association with each card, ie
Fool = aleph (ox)
Magician = beth (house)
High Priestess = gimel (camel) ...

Those are a couple i like, I think it is also true that the Tarot will sort of teach you in its own way, it is actually a living "book" so to speak...
