Over the Bluffs
From the sea came a boy and his grandfather. They came here from another world, another place, another time. Dragging their feet, they walk through the sandy beach upward toward the bluffs. Tired, and strained, they stop for a rest. As they sit on gray rocks below the limestone they turn their heads toward a noise. It grows louder, closer.
The grandfather looks over at the boy motioning his finger to his upper lip. "Shh." He points up toward the bluffs.
He and the boy begin to climb up the bluffs, careful not to make any loud noise. They reach the top and begin to observe a commotion between a couple. What is being said is too quiet to hear from where the boy and his grandfather sit, only soft and bitter tones filled the otherwise quiet landscape.
"What's happening?" The boy asked.
"This is what we came here for." The Grandfather insisted to the boy.
The boy watched as the couple waived their arms and cursed each other.
"What's wrong with them? Why do they act like that?" He asked.
His Grandfather looked deeply at the couple, his green eyes piercing through the distance, then took a moment to soak in the blue sky above him, breathed in and said to the boy,
"They're mad."
"But why?" The boy asked, "They have everything they need."
"Because," the Grandfather sighed, "their world doesn't work they way they want it to."
"Why don't they change it?"
The Grandfather smiled to his grandson, "They don't know they can."
