Theosophy distinguishes between an "all-perceiving Ego" and a "personal Ego."
In my view, the personal ego is the personality adopted (see Shakuntala Modi, Memories of God and Creation) for a reincarnation.
Quote:
My birth month has also been decided. The placement of the Sun has to deal with the balance in this life. [...] The date has been decided, almost as a mathematical equation.

This patient of Modi was born a Libra.
Quote:
And, so long as the contrast of Subject and Object endures -- to wit, as long as we enjoy our five senses and no more, and do not know how to divorce our all-perceiving Ego (the Higher Self) from the thraldom of these senses -- so long will it be impossible for the personal Ego to break through the barrier which separates it from a knowledge of things in themselves (or Substance).

You are what you are at any given time and that's fine and dandy, as from what I've seen, it all adds to progress and I reckon that within that acceptance of all our parts we begin to advance the self away from just within us to being part of a bigger picture.
And theres nothing we can really do to stop that progress.
I remember learning the idea of enlightened self interest which me and a friend bandied back and forth a decade or two ago. We realised that if we did our best and believed in that best all the other stuff would take care of itself and that we would progress inspite of the supposed naivety we embraced... it works.
And over time this idea fades away as a way to define your way and you just do what is most obvious, almost the path of least resistance, and find yourself acting in a wider context. The thing is that the feedback is that despite the supposed silliness of what we do, for the whole, we are actually always cared for... we always have enough.
Later on we drop all ambitions even and find that ambitions find us...
Selflessness isn't something to attain... it just happens all by itself within a willingness to trust.

I do not believe the Ego exist at all beside as a label you buy into and put upon part of yourself. So if the label Ego does nothing good for you just stop buying into it

Egocentricity comes from mixing the experience with the I am ness, you are not a thing, like something objective, you are subjective, ever changing ever growing.
