You can pretend , like you can pretend to eat.
If you associate "afterlife" with the non physical earth realm yes, spirits will rest, and sort of sleep, because they are still geared and behave within this reality. Once a spirit disconnects from all earth realms and moves into the astral realm, everything changes.

Well, I have closed my eyes during an out of body experience, so I would imagine it is quite likely that if you wish to, you will be able to 'close your eyes' when dwelling on the Astral, and a thousand and one other things as well. I think we will find we can do all sorts of things -even more than our imaginations run to in the present life here!

Sleep in the afterlife?

A large part of me accepts the fact that life is a flowing, moving medium with currents, and that we are our physical appearance. Much of what we perceive ourselves to be will be our memory of what we subconsciously take with us. So sleeping or thinking we're sleeping (sounds like the Matrix a bit) will only be another perceived thing we probably think is necessary.
Stupid as it sounds, my concern is not about dying, its more about will I get thirsty or hungry, or at least think I'm one of the two. I love drinking water.
The other point in all of this is how often we hear so often that "death is not believed by all".
Is there any hope that even a small portion of the reports we hear of the contact between life and death; there findings still speak of people in denial of death.
That's a cool question.

My personal memories of the between-lives state is that the rule of "As Above, so Below. As Below, so Above" applies. Just as people have a wide variety of psychic and spiritual experiences while incarnated, they also tend to have carry-overs of physical experiences while on the Other Side. These carry-overs may initially include illusions of eating and sleeping, as well as wearing clothing, living in houses, etc., but these gradually fade away as the soul gets used to living on the Astral Plane.

However, disembodied souls still alternate periods of intense activity with less active periods, but I'm not sure if this is a necessity or another carry-over that extinguishes more slowly.
