Milton Erickson's approach to hypnosis is alike in many ways to the Zen Koans ... a "confusion technique" that causes the subconscious mind to be overwhelmed and, in the case of Zen, allows the Light of Realization to shine through.
It is indeed fascinating. As Dr. David Spiegel indicated, hypnosis works due to "intense focused concentration" and Erickson's technique triggers that focused concentration on a happening as simple as a handshake. At least, that's the understanding I have in this moment on my first exposure to Erickson.
