Book1 Om Sound

I've always found this fascinating and know it means the sound of the earth I believe. Is this symbol important to Buddism? Know it sounds like a very silly question, but read about Buddism a bit and saw the symbol on many books. Something was drawn to me when I saw the symbol and it actually made me smile. Just want peoples opinions on the Om symbol and the meaningful aspects behind it. Thank you!

It makes me smile too. I'm content with that, the rest is a mystery.

To me it just represents the inner silence of Consciousness, you could call it the "word", as in the new testament, "and the word became flesh". Its not to be taken literary, well not to the one who has realized this from within their own inner Being.

And the Word was in the beginning...

My understanding explained:

Try to speak the sound of a wave crashing on shore.
Try? Ok...."Ahhh.....rooosh" or Rooooosh...hhhahhhhh.

"Om" is the human attempt to make a sound with his mouth that imitates the unspeakable Word or primordial vibration or Sat Nam (the Holy Name of God)
that exists in all, everywhere in all the dimensions....always was and always will be.

There, that was simple wasn't it?

Know the real deal not our imitation or mimicking of it, I say.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

That means alot to me coming from you.

And I should add --- that the, 'Ahhhh...roooosh' mimicking is also
Yahhhh...wehhhhh and AAAAA----uuuuu----mmmm...and
soooo.....huuuung and hammm....sooooo. (Easterners will recognize these
sound-words. So hung, ham-so, a-ham....)

(It was said on TV by Dr. Miles Munroe - Christian guy):

That is why God changed Abram's name to Abraaaa (on the inhale)----haaammm (on the exhale)....so that part of His Name
would be part of Abram's.
That may be too much for most to want to get into - but, I 'got it'. Way cool, understanding.

Needless, to say my mouth DROPPED when I heard that! Shazam!!

Wow great explanation. I love the meaning how you described it. Today I looked up symbols and always loved it. Now I'm wanting to buy jewelry cause I feel so connected with it. Lotus is a beautiful symbol too and love Zen! I've always been a peaceful person and connect with symbols that have a beautiful meaning behind it. It all started when I was younger and the first symbols I loved were the peace sign and ying-yang symbol.

Funny, I'd always associated it primarily with Hinduism.

Though I know little about Buddhism... did they adopt it as well?? I assumed the Tibetians had, but does this include other sects?
I realize, the chant is rather common though.

Recall when Ram Dass visited Mpls, the devotees were chanting this prior to his arrival...at the theater
and I had the experience of hearing both the sea, as well as the wind within their chanting... pretty cool phenomena

I've read that the "Om" chant when done properly vibrates at a particular hertz or megahertz or something (gotta research again lol), and sound waves have been known to alter the structure of water and we are 70ish% water (gotta research that again too!), so it's, um, effective in that sense...
