I've never heard of Chenrezig either. It's completely unnecessary to know any of these things.

I would disagree as do most Buddhist since Mahayana is the most popular form of Buddhism in the world.
Buddhism is beautiful and filled with Divine assistance from empowerments, transmissions and Yidam practices just to name a few.
They are powerful practices that can speed us along the path.
It is good to know them and learn them in the right manner.

Tibetan Buddhism isn't the true practice of Buddha Sakyamuni teaching. So you say it's the powerful practices. Any evidence about it. I've dealing with them, not at all, nothing of the kind. They only like to play with the spells and incantations or insignia. That's cheating in some sense or bewitch or hypnotize. It's that great? No, when they're treating with the layman of course they're great but with the true dharma they're mud and sky differences. So your saying is a joke.

We kinda stray from the path when we concern ourselves with the divine, iconic figureheads, and those sorts of things, which are typical of religions, but of course man has a made a religious following out of Gotama's teachings, and created a lot of different sects - but the core of meditation according to Gotama is outlined basically in the satipatthana sutta, and referred to as 'insight meditation', 'vipassana' and/or 'mindfulness'.

First of all, and it only occurred to me now, the title of the thread is wrong.
It should be "Buddhism found me!!!"
I think that would change one's whole approach.

IMO if there is "A" path and you get off it by concerning yourself with the divine, then by exclaiming there is no God you take yourself off the path.
Let's face it, there are as many paths in Buddhism as there are followers so it can't be about the path or "a" path.

Buddhism is beautiful in its simplicity, leave out the divine beings, empowerments, transmission and yidams, they are not part of Buddhims but ancient customs and fokelore, mythology etc: added on.
