Imagine that one day soon you would be able to have a real time conversation with people in the spirit realm, without the need for a human mediator (aka: medium or psychic). Would you use such a device to communicate to your deceased friends and relatives (assuming they wanted to talk to you) on a frequent basis? Perhaps such unencumbered communications would have unknown emotional drawbacks or other undesirable side effects. Whatever the case, is this idea a total fantasy: two way communication with the dead without human interference?
Actually there have been attempts in the past to make "spirit typewriters" with some limited success. You can easily Google the topic of "spirit typewriter" and discover that some experimenters and scientists went beyond the "conception" stage and actually made a working device. One example was a patent granted in 1922 to Sunker Abaji Bisey, an Indian scientist.
A commentary about this device shows it was an alternative to the popular Ouija board:
Quote:
Each key was attached to a letter or number hidden under the circular tray. While using the ouija board, the operator would spin the device several times before allowing "the spirits" to type on the blank keys using the handheld triangle. That ensured that the operator could not in any way see the letters the Ouija board was supposedly selecting. At the end of the session, you could pull out the ribbon to see if there were a message on it.

Another more updated invention of a "spirit typewriter" was credited to the spirit of George Jobson who supposedly gave the instructions for creating his device after his death. This device is called a "Reflectograph" and is based somewhat on a conventional typewriter but instead of requiring physical motion of typewriter keys the device allows the spirit communicator to use a "Yes" or "No" choice for each key in the keyboard. A photo of this device can be found online but I'm not allowed to post URL's yet in my replies.
Personally, I think these attempts at a "spirit typewriter" are rather crude and outdated. There have been many advances in technology since these earlier attempts to create "mental typewriters" that have real world applications in helping the severely disabled to communicate using brainwaves or focused attention. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that a modern electronic hobbyist could make a more advanced device that would enable the possibility of spirit communication.
Yet, it is an intriguing possibility. The real question from my perspective, would anyone really use it if it were available?
What do you think?
