All of the answers here are good, there are endless different ways.

You can experiment with yourself and counting breaths. I have tried different ones and they each seem to have different effects.

When my mind is really running I use the four fold breath, I breath in to a count of 4, hold it for four, breath out for 4, hold for 4 and repeat. I have varied the numbers at times too, sometimes longer on the exhale or not holding at all. I find the counting helpful when I do walking mediatation, I can get a good rythm going between my breathing and steps and then let go of the counting.

Take it easy and don't strain yourself, the effect of breathing exercises is very powerful! So take your time and best wishes!

The reason they don't count is they don't want to use the volition to create what they want, they want to observe what is.

Meditation is all about concentration. If you would like to count your breaths, you should concentrate on them alone, i.e. count their number.

I take it back, counting is a good way to meditate for people who have a really hard time blanking out their mind

The reasons for not counting are:

1. counting is mental activity, not observation
2. counting uses the volition to create, and doesn't observe what happens to be
3. Meditator becomes focused on the counting and forgets about the breath

Want to count it's fine, but it's not necessary, and in the long run, not counting is better
