I am a bit paranoid about fake stuff too, I tend to stay away from new age shops and buy almost exclusively from places that deal direct with the mines. I also get along with the owners of some of the shops and they give me insights on fakes and things like that. Mostly buy raw crystals as I love the natural formations and it's easier to detect fake ones.

Intriguing! I'm gonna try that, just for the heck of it. Just gotta think where my magnet has gone. Hmmfff ... fridge magnet?
EDIT: just did, wow! Awesome! I wished I'd known that when my hematite chippies were scattered and I had trouble picking them up, chuckle.
