Not sure if anyone will notice this because I know the discussion is ongoing, but one thing I've come to accept is that each individual's body and constitution are unique to them. There are no hard and fast rules about any kind of diet that is appropriate for everyone.

It's up to each person to try out different things and see what works for them. Once you realize that holistic nutrition is about recognizing individual needs, and not forcing statistics upon others, it will release the egos from the equation. In other words, raw food vegans and staunch carnivores can BOTH be right, in accordance with what works for them!

I am living proof

I am living proof that a low calorie diet is better for you. I eat a regular sized meal once every 2 days, and very little snacks in between. Less than a month ago I went to see my family doctor, and he told me that I am the healthiest 24 yr. old that he has ever seen. My blood pressure is perfect for my height, age, and weight. He also asked me what I eat on a daily basis. I told him that i don't eat on a daily basis. He asked me what my stress level is, expecting me to say that i have little stress. Well I am homeless and sleep in a park or under the trees more times than not. If thats not stress tell me what is. Not to mention the fact that I live in Ohio where its less than 20 degrees out. My point is that even though I don't want to be in the situation that I am in now I am the healthiest that I have ever been, and i believe that its because of my change of diet and my living conditions.

The Divine,

There's always a danger of becoming too rigid in our positions. While taking the position that "everyone is different" can seem more flexible, it can in fact be just as rigid as any other position. My research has shown, and continues to show, that, while there are differences which ought to be taken into account, they are not as significant as you might suppose. When you're addicted to eating meat, it can be tempting to make justifications for your cravings, especially when the average doctor is corroborating that for you. The fact is, the kind of "diets" I'm promoting are not your usual vegetarian or vegan diets, which, I admit, could be less than ideal for certain types of people. I'm pretty sure that even most vegetarians and vegans are not informed about the things I'm trying to share here, and many who are do not practice them. For one thing, non-fermented soy is a toxin.* My findings suggest that the differences between physiological types are relatively superficial, and in order to transcend those differences, you need to get to the heart of what a truly, truly healthy dietary plan consists of. This means, not just cutting out meat, but cutting out most carbohydrates, and most cooked foods; subsisting on primarily raw fruits and vegetables; especially dark-green leafy vegetables; mostly in the form of juices. There are still differences. For instance, diabetics should mostly avoid fruits, which are high in sugars, and focus on veggies. And some people may require nuts and seeds to obtain adequate fats. But, despite a few exceptions like these, for the most part, what I'm sharing are hard and fast rules which nearly anyone can depend on. I'm still researching the effects of RAW (unpasteurized), organic dairy, but the dairy you find in the store is toxic -- period. Also, not all carbs are the same. Rye can activate DNA which other grains leave dormant. Ideally, though, I believe all grains can be eliminated, but I'm still researching to make sure of this claim. Lastly, climate can make a difference; some people in colder climates may benefit from nuts, seeds, and healthy grains like rye. So, as you see, while my position may appear extreme in relation to the mainstream, it is still fairly nuanced and flexible.

shabda,

You can research Gabriel Cousens plan for treating type 1.

Making a claim to be able to cure something is a big deal,
and, while I will not claim that all type 1 diabetics can be cured,
I can tell you that some type 1 diabetics can be cured,
and weened off of insulin completely, while many others
can, at least, reduce their dependency on insulin, and
see dramatic changes in their health for the better.

It is a lifestyle change, and the choice is yours,
but, yes, it requires a fair amount of commitment,
and I don't blame anyone for preferring the shots.

Even if you cannot cure yourself of diabetes,
as I said, you can see radical changes for the better.
Ultimately, any change in this direction, however small,
is going to make you healthier and probably happier.

greg,

I've heard many stories like yours, and it's a shame that more people haven't heard them. Folks who start radically altering their diets in these directions frequently get singled out by their doctors as star patients. Usually, they transcend their doctor's level of expertise, and end up changing doctors (when they can afford to do so). The reason more of these people are not on mainstream doctors' radars, is that, as these people continue to get healthier, they mostly end up going to doctors who have training in natural healing. The healthiest people never, or rarely, set food inside a traditional doctor's office. I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but I can see God is using it to witness to an extremely important reality here. My advice is to train your mind to habits of positive thinking. While I would not blame any outward situation entirely on negative thought patterns, or suggest that all you need is to look on the bright side, I can confidently say that it makes a big difference, and is the first place to start, when making positive changes in your life. Opportunities are necessary, but so is the faith which encourages us to pursue them. I wish you faith and opportunities. It sounds like you're already on a path to greater health and wholeness. God Bless

Shabda: I'm sure there are, but i doubt any of them are diabetics, the calories disappear REAL fast for me, so i have to keep putting them in...

I'm like you Shabda - while not diabetic, I can become very weak and shaky due to low blood sugar if I don't eat enough. My mom is an RN and she said that I should have upwards of around 6,000 calories a day for the way my body consumes them. I simply can't keep up with my body as fast as it consumes the calories.

The best meals for me are small - high calorie - high protein meals...and eat 5 a day. I've tried that, and that's what works best for me. That way I have a steady supply of energy.

*high fives Kapitan* Yeah, I'd definitely be dead pretty quickly too if I didn't eat at least four times a day. Those of us with no body fat and high metabolisms need extra calories just to stay warm in the winter, let alone do stuff like clean the house or go for a walk. I dance so I need extra protein. Even if I cut down on meat and up my intake of other kinds of protein it's not enough, I end up spraining every joint I've got.

I understand you fully. I have to make sure I get plenty of magnesium and other vitamins in my body - but the one I watch the most is the Magnesium because my body's pretty low in that (and the Western diet is low in it to begin with). From what I've read with the links between low mag. and Fibromyalgia - I was pretty amazed. I know when my body is low in mag. and that's when I get the muscle tightness again, more susceptible to the cold temperatures, my mood is affected, etc. And the thing is - I experienced these things before I read about them. It wasn't until after I had done the research that I realized all the connections.

You got that right! My body is the lean muscular type - used to run long distance. Like you mentioned - I need the extra cal. only due to a different health reason now (aside from my metabolism) - the CFS.
