JusticeKane - you are absolutely not misinformed! More to the point you have already at a minimum cracked upon the door of enlightenment. I say this because you are in fact asking exactly the right question to find the answer you are looking for. It is these kinds of questions that will guide your spiritual growth and broader understanding.
I pondered this same question in meditation and this is what I learned to further my understanding / interpretation that my higher self revealed to me.
Your eternal soul, your higher or celestial self is in part a collection of all your incarnations of physical existence and material experience. This is not to say your soul is entirely based on this collection because the soul eternally exists despite these experience(s).
In this understanding - I believe the term reincarnation has a lot of potential to mislead the speaker/listener in really understanding what this concept means. As I am sure you have witnessed or experienced your self. Many people make the the claim they have had many incarnations. I to have claimed this because of the incarnate regressions I have experienced, presumably this is why others believe this and make the claim.
There is a big
BUT here though... What I learned is the past life experience of regression it self is completely misunderstood and often distracts the intent of the experience in and of it self. What I mean is analogous to a child receiving a present and showing more interest in the box a toy was delivered in than the toy itself. More to the point, this distraction in many cases leaves the person having this experience to the idea that this past life they were exposed to belongs to them. Essentially they take ownership of it and not realize that this past life experience is not there experience. It belongs to the person who lived that physical and material incarnation as well as the celestial self this incarnation is a manifestation of. In short - this incarnation you are being exposed to is simply being shared with you in order to further develop your understanding. It's a learning tool your soul uses to help guide you.
Fundamentally important is to recognize and understand a past life that an individual may experience is only related to the individual by the celestial connection between you and your higher self. This is hard for some people to acknowledge and I get that. I too struggled with this very notion in meditation until my higher self posed this question. Does the life you are experiencing in the here and now belong to an incarnation that has not yet been inspired and experienced? In this question I realized my foolish human ego was obfuscating what was really happening here.
I believe it is in this understanding you can find the answers for the questions you have asked and perhaps the ones you have not yet asked.

Maybe, maybe not, Yes and No -- I'm not sure that is a point worthy of your consideration though. But your current life, your experience will remain whole. The conscious of your experience of who JusticeKane "Is" will be preserved for eternity because it is inherited (experienced) by your eternal soul. Likewise, the spirit or your incarnate consciousness will continue to have influence on the living as long as the living continue to call on you. To think of you and to wonder how you are doing. Eventually - as the living forgets who you are - you live on through the experience of other physical and material incarnations and perhaps you too, will lend your experience - the experience that belongs to your spirit, to that unique incarnation not yet inspired and fully experienced that will ultimately be added to the sum of your souls experience just as you have.
I know this was a bit long winded - I hope it provided more insight for you to consider in seeking the answer to the knowledge you are seeking.
