We can substitute the word “skillful” with the word “mature” and the word “unskillful” with the word “immature.” Maturity meaning utilizing our full potential, or at least to the level we have developed.

Protecting yourself or others is one thing and people being humble is another. Humble people, in my opinion do not let other people walk all over them. Although a humble person may express themselves differently than an arrogant person. The renowned martial artist, Bruce Lee, was very humble.

There is also a difference between a humble person and a person with low self-esteem. Humility, in my opinion, does not mean surrendering to this world.

Thich Nhat Hanh uses the term "unskillful" here:

https://plumvillage.app/thich-nhat-hanh-on-forgiveness/

How to forgive everything

All of us are unskillful at times. At these times, we suffer and make other people suffer. And that may include the person we love.

But when we are unskillful, and we suffer and make another person suffer, we wish to be forgiven.

But that is not enough; we have to learn from our unskillfulness. To do so, we may ask the other person not only for his or her forgiveness, but also their support.
