Being Veg*n and bone strength

I have been a vegetarian for 9 years now and in the last 18 months a dairy free vegan. For most of my life I have been conditioned to believe I needed dairy for strong bones and it worried me because I wasn't eating it anymore.

On Friday I had an accident in that I fell down many stairs backwards and when I hit the bottom I hit very hard and am having a quiet and fairly sore weekend. I was sure I broke a bone doing it and got it x-rayed and sure enough it's fine.

About 2 months ago an old guy made me come off my bicycle because he rode in front of me while he was daydreaming or something and I had to ditch my bike so we both didn't end up a mess and went over the handlebars and landed hard on the ground. I just got up dusted myself off and was fine except for some grazes etc.

The thing is I am 45 and not eating dairy but not getting fractures or breaks from very hard hits. Interesting development considering advertising said I need dairy.

I think it is in the documentary "Forks over Knives" they say something about in the countries where people are consuming most milk there is most bone problems. Not my best writing to date, but it gets the idea across I hope

That's he funny thing if you believe popularised myths about iron, calcium and protein you would think all us veg*ns would have problems but the truth is we don't, or I don't anyway.

Lightspirit - I am not a vegan, but got very frail by over dieting once and broke 2 ribs just by coughing. That's when I was told it was important to take 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium supplement a day along with a Vitamin D supplement to aid in the absorption of the calcium. Does being a vegan prevent you from taking calcium supplementation?

I can answer that. No. If you so wish, you can get vegan calcium supplements (usually derived from kelp/seaweed) and vegan vitamin D (D2 & D3)

Actually guys I was just talking to one of those fre sponsored online nurse things provided by our government to call regarding health issues because my ankle is swollen up bad still and wanted advice. I was discussing this topic with her and she said she is a vegetarian too. She also told me studies have shown there is more fractures in those consuming dairy than vegetarians, I am not sure how true this is but if it it is its pretty funny, well we thought so anyway.
I started taking that calcium and vitamin D stuff for something to do anyway out of boredom in the last month to see what it does. I also have flax seed oil and vitamin e to see what that does too. Its heaps better than eating a slimy, stinky fish..

Given there are more meat / dairy consumers than non-meat and dairy consumers... yes, I would go with the facts of that study.

You can be perfectly healthy without eating dairy products, although if you are concerned, you can always get a health check. Moderate weight bearing exercise also helps to keep bones strong.

New studies are suggesting that taking calcium supplements can increase your risk of a heart attach by 30%? Most of the calcium ends up in your blood vessels and not in your bones. It is better to get your calcium from diet.

Actually, most people can't tolerate dairy products anyway. Just not many are aware of it. I have a severe lactose intolerance so even when I was eating meat (I'm not now) I couldn't consume dairy products. I seem to recall a lot of evidence that dairy products aren't good for us or even the best sources of calcium. Leafy greens, almonds and seasme are all good.
