Root intelligence: Plants can think, feel and learn
There is a very interesting article in New Scientist magazine (6 Dec 2014) about plants ability to be aware and react to their environment.
Recent research shows that plants can sense their environments, process information, act according to preferences, remember, communicate, and possibly feel pain.
Unfortunately you have to be a subscriber to read it

However there is a summary here:
Smarty Plants: Research Shows they Think, Feel, and Learn

No, not really. At this point in our evolution, we need to eat plants to survive. We do not need to eat other animals to survive. It's a matter of doing the best we can to not participate in the torture and suffering of other beings.
(And while I give some credence to this research, it has not been replicated and peer-reviewed, so the jury is still out.)
