As for slavery..................

Years ago, I had an elderly Jewish woman working for me. We would get into certain Biblical discussions and one topic dealt with slavery. I told her that some Jews sold themselves into slavery to Jewish masters. She claimed that was not true. She went home and asked her Mother about it. Her Mother told her it was true.

The issue of slavery in the Bible lead us into the discussion of some of the progressive, liberal aspects of the Law. She did not realize how progressive the Law actually was. For example, every 7 years certain property rights would be restored. Our modern day Bankruptcy Laws are based on aspect of the Law which dealt with such matters.

Slavery in the bible.

“When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.

One of many disgusting Verse....

Slavery for many in the Jewish belief system, was a blessing. If a family was starving, the father could sell himself to another Jew. The father knew when his property rights which included himself would be restored. That progressive, liberal law provided hope. If you look at other forms of government, then and now, none have provided such a unique way of preserving the individual and/or family unit.

Disgusting.... Buying and selling a Human being is obnoxious..

If men contend with each other, and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but is confined to his bed, if he rises again and walks about outside with his staff, then he who struck him shall be acquitted. He shall only pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for him to be thoroughly healed. And if a man beats his male or female servant with a rod, so that he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. Notwithstanding, if he remains alive a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his property. (Exodus 21:18–21)

And I rest my case....

To a Jew, being a freeman was something to aspire to. Being a slave was the opposite.

Today, some have speculated that those who work for others, are still paying off their home and other bills, are slaves to their employer/master.

If you look at other religions, slavery does show up.

For example, in Buddhism, slavery shows up in the

Adiya Sutta: Benefits to be Obtained (from Wealth)

which reads:

"Then Anathapindika the householder went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there the Blessed One said to him: "There are these five benefits that can be obtained from wealth. Which five?

"There is the case where the disciple of the noble ones — using the wealth earned through his efforts & enterprise, amassed through the strength of his arm, and piled up through the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained — provides himself with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. He provides his mother & father with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. He provides his children, his wife, his slaves, servants, & assistants with pleasure & satisfaction, and maintains that pleasure rightly. This is the first benefit that can be obtained from wealth."

Did you notice 'his slaves'?

Yes it's disgusting and obnoxious in any Religion, thankfully the Buddha didn't condone it, as it went against all that he taught
