WH Uffington

Hello I'm WH Uffington,

I am a writer and historian specialising in ancient history. I also spent a sabbatical year studying Comparative Religion.

Many years ago I set out to write a novel and needed to research Celtic religion. What I discovered came as a shock. I had always thought of myself as a good Christian, though I had never been devout or a regular churchgoer.

Besides doubting the integrity of the Old Testament, I was repelled by the ritual and the subservience that the congregation gave to the priesthood and to God. The latter may appear shockingly blasphemous, but this is not so; eventually it made perfect sense for what I learned was that the point of our existence is a reunion with God, where we become one and equal.

Church buildings assailed me with another problem; I loved the exterior architecture, but could never feel comfortable inside. Churches were cold soulless places where I was always conscious of an invisible dark shadow pressing down heavily upon me. Eventually I discovered the reason why: virtually every ancient church was constructed over a pagan holy site that had been a place of healing using the earth’s energy. Christian missionaries had capped these energy vortices with stone altars; the Christian structure now laid on top, with its unskilled and uneducated priests within unable to use the energy to heal their miserable congregations.

I began by immersing myself in Celtic history and mythology but once I widened my research to early Christianity I found something that shook me to the core. In 1999, I came across a new book, The Jesus Mysteries by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy, two philosophers who had apparently aspired to write a biography of Jesus, but had instead exposed a minefield full of facts that showed there was no–one for them to write about, and that the original Christianity was not unique, but just another version of the widespread Mystery religion.

The revelations in this book hit me hard when perhaps I should have been prepared, instead I was shocked and stunned and even worse, I felt betrayed. I felt a rage at the Church’s deliberate lies, for many obviously knew the truth, and even worse, I felt fury at the way these unscrupulous people had used religion to control — frightening children with threats of eternal torture by demons in hell for committing sins is appalling spiritual, mental and emotional abuse.

Eventually I overcame my anger and the feeling that I had been cast adrift. Now with no God and no afterlife, I returned to my research, not for a novel, but to unearth the truth that could expose that greatest lie. I discovered that the Jewish religion was a political concoction of myth, legend and history designed to hide its true origins in Egypt. I discovered that Christianity was a shallow distortion of the original Egyptian Mysteries.

I discovered that the Church hid its origins by persecution and slaughter and created a fictional history to portray itself as the upholder of the one true faith; it had been run by people who were morally corrupt, who lusted after wealth and power, who unhesitatingly resorted to lies and forgery, who undertook the destruction of civilisation and indulged in the mass slaughter of rivals with a psychopathic enthusiasm. Yet it had always been opposed by a secret organisation which kept the true Mystery alive.

More surprisingly I discovered that the original deceivers are now at the cutting edge of scientific research that proves beyond doubt the eternal soul. In the early years, the uneducated Christians of Rome were considered pariahs; by chance they rose to power and destroyed their critics, destroyed evidence and invented a new fictional history for themselves. They turned religious allegories into real history, now they have the opportunity to make a better world, but first they must admit that theirs was The Greatest Lie Ever Told.

In response to demands following publication of The Greatest Lie Ever Told I am now adding to the Egyptian content and will shortly publish another book that focusses on the Egyptian basis of monotheism.
