This is the first time I've read your posts re having a mother with dementia. I felt initially concerned that you may have not understood what I had explained. I have been working with seniors (about 80% of my work is with dementia) for about eight years now, and have seen so much elder abuse from families who have Not understood or taken the time to give empathy for the person's reality.
Also trying to provide their care is often challenging too. Like trying to convince them they need to take their medications or have their catheter dealt with. Often times they develop UTI's due to resistance to care, so then the delirium they portray is difficult to determine if it's delirium due to a UTI or simply a change in their dementia. It can be like trying to deal with an injured and resistant porcupine!

Oh no. CatChild, you didn't come off as anything but caring and concerned! And I appreciate your caring very much. This was just a trying week and I was going to explode if I didn't get it out. My sweet mother will get the best I can give her, believe me. We laugh alot over her lack of memory, and I commiserate with her when she gets frustrsted. I don't push unless it is vital to her well being - like drinking and eating and moving a little bit. We live only about 5 minutes apart, so I can be there in a heartbeat if she needs me. My brother lives fairly close as well. You are an angel to those seniors for sure. Thank you for your caring heart.

wow, I had to double read back through the posts, sounds like my son's schizophrenia issues. He is the same way with the memory, stubbornness, attitude, everything. He's 24 years old going on 5. It's frustrating and doesn't help when they have other issues along with it.

Oh Rhodes. I'm sorry. My son is 24 as well and severely bipolar(unmedicated). Stability has been wonderful - before meds he was impossible. I know a little about what you live with. We can console each other and learn from each other! Our brains are such delicate things. Maybe in our kids life time there will be a cure, or at least a long term treatment that will allow them to live normal lives. (((HUGS))).
