Historically, the Fourth Council was held sometime between 127 BC and 72 A.D. (depending on whose account you believe). At that council they finally preserved the Suttas in writing. Being Buddha was enlightened in 543 B.C. (a date that not all agree to), a lot of time had transpired in which what Buddha said, etc. could have been easily changed and modified.

As for finalizing the Suttas, the Fifth and Sixth council, which were in modern times (1871/1954-1956 respectively), finalized the Tipiṭaka, with all of the variations.

Not one word of violence in ANY of The Buddha's Teachings - Sutra/Suttas

So, is that the reason why there is so much 'Violence' in Buddhism?

I understand why there is so much 'Violence' in Buddhism and it does not bother me except for the part when people have died.

This 'abnormality' also shows up in Christianity and is used by non-believing Christians to support their position that there is something 'wrong' with Christianity.

This 'abnormality' is known by a certain word that emphasizes the point that some people do not do what their religion expects from them and is usually brought to their attention by others.

The Gospel of Thomas was never canonized.

GOSPEL OF THOMAS
  VERSE 38

(38) Jesus said,

"Often you desired to hear these words
that I am speaking to you,
and you have no one else to hear them from.

There will be days when you will look for me
and you will not find me."

BigJohn,

And when that day comes one will have to realize that it is time to wake up. Essentially to realize the Christ that is within.

I think he needs to be invited in, Realize sounds to me like he has been within all along. Our True Self can be realized, but I wonder can it be realized without Jesus specifically bringing his light and showing the way?

There are times we must be patient, especially when our inner voice is not providing any guidance.

For me this one is sort of the other side of the blind leading the blind verse. Rather then just speaking about himself, Jesus is speaking about a true voice for knowledge/word in the world. He is saying that often people are spiritually looking, but often miss or pay attention to the wrong thing (teacher). A true teacher/guru is very rare in the world, one should take advantage when you have the opportunity.

VERY NICE COMMENT!

You wrote:
"He is saying that often people are spiritually looking, but often miss or pay attention to the wrong thing (teacher)." which is an astute observation. Your comments are always a joy, filled with an old soul's wisdom.

It is always enjoyable to listen to your viewpoints. Your viewpoint on a true teacher/guru emphasizes one of many things that is lacking in this world and then you contrasted that with when you do find a true teacher'guru: latch upon the person.
