Pilgrimage

I'm considering going to visit the main Buddhist pilgrimage sites (particularly Bodh Gaya and Sarnath) next year and I am wondering if anyone has already done this. If so, what was your experience like? Did you find it particularly helpful to your practice? Would you recommend it above going on retreat in your own country? Is there a particular energy or atmosphere that the places have which helps you?

I am not Buddhist and have not been to where you are talking about. However, I think in general, pilgrimages are usually more about the journey than the destination.

No matter what effect the 'place' may have on you, you will have to leave it. No matter what you may learn there, you will need to continue practicing. You may gain insight, a sense of awe and connectedness, but these things will pass, and you will be left with nothing but your integrity and sincerity.

Your pilgrimage will continue, this place being just a passing point.

I hope that you enjoy being there, and experiencing whatever it has to offer you.
