I've always viewed self realization as the experience of knowing an aspect of oneself that was previously unknown.
As one traverse the unknowns parts of oneself, either completely unknown or parts where there were doubts uncertainities.
And these parts are unlit, they are the hidden, lost, deeper parts of oneself.
The self that dwells in the darkness, and it's the light of oneself that upon venturing into these areas, one becomes fully aware of them.
Self illumination, not light illumintaitn light, but light illuminating dark.
One has made it real, no more uncertainty, doubt, ignorance, confusion.
One fully understands, one has real-ised.
It has become real, fully accepted, understood. no more dark unknown parts to it.
It's referred to as dark because in the physical realm, one can't see what is in darkness.
Not that one's darkened parts are bad, negative or evil as dark(ness) is classified by some.
But simply dark because there is no light to expose what is there.
