I think to some extent we all have our hands on our own steering wheel of life and we can steer that wheel in any direction we wish .
It's not always that simple I know, but as I always told my kids..
"You can do anything in life, the only thing stopping you is you..."...

What's my excuse I hear you all cry...
It's quite simple.
I was never given a steering wheel !!!

I have worked with disabled veterans and I am a disabled veteran myself,
one of the things I often tell disabled people is:

Do not let what you can not do get in the way of what you can do. This is
something that I feel applies to everyone, disabled or not.

Another good quote comes to mind by Helen Keller who was both blind and deaf. She said: Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

I like that.

Gee whiz, maybe I'm showing my age, slowing down...the last thing I personally want is a daring adventure!
Peace, calm, some laughs and beauty, some art projects, learning, some great movies, appreciating things, meditating,
Practicing the Presence and a good cup coffee...nothing daring, but not 'nothing' for me!

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

ReturningMoon - As my late Grandmother used to say, "The only things certain in life are taxes and death!"

I'd like to add to what she said and include 'suffering'. I wish that everyone experienced joy and love, but sadly that's not the case.

Miss H.

Yep I certainly need the same things as you now especially at the later stages of my life. But I think she was implying that from a youngster and onwards when we start forging our identity and finding our place in this world.

My understanding of this quote “daring adventure” doesn’t necessarily mean going out into the world and doing amazing things like climbing Everest or taking on a major cause, or walking the Camino. For some people it might mean stepping out of their comfort zone for a few days or standing up to someone who is treating you unfairly or learning a new trade. That is a daring adventure for some people.

For me personally, I gotta say my life really has been a daring adventure but I don’t need that kinda life now.

Anyway that is how I perceive her quote. Don’t know if it’s right or not but just my thoughts about it.

There are a lot of good answers here, and I agree with them also.
But many moons ago I worked with Young Adults some with some severe Disabilities. and they for the most part always had a smile on their faces.
Some had Downs syndrome,
There was a young adult there and he always used to tell the others to smile

Because he said if I smile all the time I can sit with Jesus when i die.

Good advice, no matter the explanation one has for it.
