Study the choosing of the Dali Lama. He must as a boy, have extensive knowledge of his associates, belongings, close friends and a vast number of things of his previous life as a Dali Lama.
He must also recognize his belongings from his previous life on a table in a room with many tables in it all full of folded robes and belongings of many different lama's and monks who have crossed over.
I think I recall the testing goes on for weeks to just 100% verify that he is actually the Dali Lama re-incarnated.

yes
I too wondered about this. I believe the souls just recognize one another regardless of appearance. Your mind may manifest the way they looked when you knew them as a comfort to you.
The show Charmed had an episode about it and the Movie Little Buddha (1993) also dealt with it. The movie was based on a true story.
