That's what I said. People don't know what it is... and the OP asks what meditation is, but no-one can say it is a thing, it's a practice.
The methods that are around sometimes (usually) deal in imagining this or that but such practice doesn't see 'what is', it sees what is prefered... and once I heard someone say that a seeker finds what he seeks, but never sees 'what is.'
It is mistaken for day dreaming... but the wandering mind drifts off into the future and dwells in the memory, but the very essence of the practice brings the mind into this moment, and sees it as it is, so it is fixed awareness as the poster said, and effective meditation takes concentration so mind becomes sharper, more attentive and subtly perceptive.
