How I see it, it could have been some astral entity. I've sometimes felt hands around my throat trying to choke me (and it's an experience many people have mentioned). In my case, these hands were always very feeble, unable to do much, but I think the experience can also be intense (though it can't actually hurt you afaik).

If I watch something dark or disturbing it is reflected in my dreams. So I try not to do that.

Many years ago, I dreamed that I approached a location, and felt my energy rapidly depleting. Curious, I went a little further in, and it got worse. I don't remember now, but I think I woke up, gasping for air, sleeping on my back, which I rarely do. I'm pretty sure it was sleep apnea.
I didn't want to test it by going any further in. I don't know if I had, if I would have died in real life. (I'd guess probably not, I'd have woke up.)
