How can there be a 42GB file around? What is it about?

This forum's software was designed to run on an old version of PHP but due to that version being unavailable on this new server, we were forced to run it on PHP 5.6. And PHP 5.6 writes a message to the error_log every time a deprecated function is called which is literally almost every second. This causes the log file to grow very fast and in another few weeks we'll be in the same boat unless it's fixed.

I tried to turn off logging the usual ways of doing that but that isn't working.

To inspirit..
I know absolutely nothing about how computers or technology works.
But I was thinking if we all complied a list of our old threads and submit to admin to delete , would this help ?
Or am I being silly ?
( Plus I know this would cause a lot of work for admin when they do enough already )
But it was just a thought.
Otherwise , same as others, Thank You.

I keep getting the message "Error code 520: Web server is returning an unknown error"..
Am I the only one, because I don't think it has been mentioned?

Is the storage compromised by the amount of images on the site? Perhaps they could be stored offsite and accessed via a link?(I have less knowledge than most on how these things work!)I also couldn't post for a while so PM'd admin but not sure if the PM worked either.

so what inspirit was saying, is, that because we are having to use a version of 'PHP' (a software program) that the site wasn't designed for, that version of PHP is making warnings about various incompatibilities with the version of PHP the site was designed for. It does that by adding a line of text to a file in the file system for each warning. Apparently, one or more lines of text are being written each second so over a period of several months, the file grows bigger and bigger until there is no space left on the server for new posts.

So it isn't so much a matter of our posts or our images taking up space too much space, it is a matter that this file keeps growning and growing and growing and over time takes over all the free space. Deleteing the file fixes the problem in the short term but then it just starts growing again and we might have the problem later.

So i guess inspirit is trying to figure out how to stop this file from growing so we won't keep having these issues....
