I've heard said that the energy must activate and does so for all who spiritually evolve or rid themselves of that which does not serve, whether it is particularly addressed or not.

Essentially, as I see it, the kundalini or Divine Mother, is both immanent (in duality) and transcendent (in singularity) and as such ‘carries us’, from ‘here’ to ‘there’. If this be so, then energisation is necessary or at least helpful. Moreover, the energisation internalises attention by force since bliss pulsates within unendingly and as such positions us in a meditation continuum.

my own thought is I don't HAVE to go where I'm not, so energization or really anything isn't 'necessary' in any 'real' sense. Simply, if I don't want it I can do without? Nothing binding me to that or really anything other than my own desire to be bound...

That said if I want to go somewhere anyway I might find some use in various things like energization.

@ FallingLeaves ~ ultimately, it is about removal of ignorance, is it not? So yes, if we can recognise our true being directly and unambiguously, not conceptually, I suppose that serves the purpose without energisation.

The challenge is embodying what we recognise in singularity in our active awareness in duality, without oscillation, thus bilocating, so to speak. Perhaps only then can we affirm that we have woken up.

I see it this way from a Non Dual perspective: our true nature of being is here no matter what appears. If we experience human blissful states or spiritual blissful states, we remain as we are. If we experience harmonisation or discord it is not us. We are as we are, beyond the play of opposites in the world.

So no practice is necessary to be as we are. Yet practice seems necessary to realise this truth. So, practice is necessary until we realise that practice is unnecessary. :)
