Time to stop using animals as entertainment

A trainer at Sea World was nearly killed by a killer whale. Why? Because the nursing mother was forced to perform when her baby was calling out to her.
I cannot understand why it is necessary to have animals forced to "perform" - jumping through hoops, etc. - just to entertain people. Worse still, it is regarded as good for families, including children. If the trainer had been killed, perhaps the "family entertainment" label would look a bit shabby!

IMHO, the same applies to animals used in circuses.

Here is the article I'm referring to: http://www.globalanimal.org/2012/07/...urfaces/78969/

Exploitation?

Are we forgetting about the thousands upon thousands of children who develop a love of the natural world by viewing these kinds of things? The positive inspiration it brings? The ones among them who grow up to become defenders of Gaea?

Weigh the good with the bad, folks. Provided the creatures are treated well, the bad paid is minuscule compared to the respect for the wonders of Gaea it instills in the hearts of humans. Especially in this day and age when people are pathologically detached from the nonhuman world. The awareness is worth the price tag. Having an experience at a zoo or botanical garden can make or break someone caring or not caring about the rest of the world.

And there speaks someone who hasn't reached understanding yet. Hey ho, don't worry it'll come.

And there speaks someone who is so arrogantly self-righteous that he feels the need to be condescending towards anyone else with a different opinion. *rolls eyes*

Sorry, I'm not usually so blunt, but that was kind of rude. I'm not asking for agreement. I like to present different perspectives to get people to consider and understand vantage points other than their own. There's another side of the story here that begged to be told, so I told it.

I think you'll find that joints like sea world do a lot of animal rescue... and conservation.

If the animal is loving what it is doing, allow it to perform. But if it needs a break to attend another, give it one, I'm sure there are plenty who understand, when a baby needs its mom, mom has to go to baby no matter what is going on. But those animals who don't want to perform and are being forced to... let them go somewhere else so they can live happily. Animals can communicate and have feelings, more people need to be aware of that. You see their abuse so much, just bc ppl think they are less then humans are, they treat them terribly sometimes, thinking "oh it's ok" when its not. No one should be deprived of happiness or love, and that should go for all living things, not just humans. We aren't any more special then they are, we just think we are (oh I'm ranting here, sry bout that.) We need to start treating others with respect and stop ignoring that "others" includes animals and plants, among the other creatures. It's not up to us who is better or worse, but we've overstepped those boundaries for years, we started with friendship and then we ended up abusing it.

If the animals is treated and fed well I don't see an issue.

When I was a little kid it was partly the zoos that increased my interest in the natural world. Some species are also kept alive because of zoos.
So yeah, good or bad? It depends on how they are treated. Circuses are usually bad.
