Opening your Third Eye – In Spirituality and Science

Spiritually, in Hindu mythology, the forms of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the maintainer or preserver and Shiva the destroyer or transformer, personify the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance and destruction. These three gods have been called “The Hindu Traid” or the “Great Trinity”. They are the different forms of the Supreme God, Lord Krishna. 'Lord Shiva’ known as Tryambaka Deva, means ‘three-eyed Lord’ often depicted as having three eyes. His right and left eyes are the sun (Yang) and moon (Yin) respectively, which represents His activities in the physical world while His third eye is the eye of wisdom.

In Hindu concept, there are 7 chakras inside the human body. Chakra is the Sanskrit word for wheel (Best, 2010). Within the Indian tradition, the chakras represent centers of energy located vertically along the spine. The first is the Muladhara (root) chakra located at the base of the spine, is identified with basic survival and self-preservation. The second is the Svadishthana (sacral) chakra located in the genital area, is identified with sensuality and procreation. The third is the Manipura (navel) chakra located in the abdominal area of solar plexus is associated with the assertion of will. The fourth is the Anahata (heart) chakra located in the upper chest is associated with the expression of unconditional love. The fifth is the Visuddha (throat) chakra located in the throat is identified with creativity and expression. The sixth is the Ajna (third eye) chakra located in the center of the head behind the eyes is associated with intuition and wisdom, where ‘Telepathy’ is experienced. Finally, the Sahasrara (crown) chakra located just above the crown of the head, symbolizes not only the highest state of consciousness but complete and total union with the source of all creation (Rama, Ballentine, & Ajaya, 1976; Scotton & Hiatt, 1996). These centers of energy are also believed to serve as seats of consciousness is referred as an “inner playroom” where the individual explores experiences with consciousness during the course of growth and development.

Kundalini stems from yogic philosophy as a form of feminine shakti or "corporeal energy". Kundalini is described within Eastern religious, or spiritual tradition as an indwelling spiritual energy that can be awakened in order to purify the subtle system and ultimately to bestow the state of Yoga, or Divine Union, upon the 'seeker' of truth. The Yoga Upanishads describe Kundalini as lying "coiled" at the base of the spine, represented as either a goddess or sleeping serpent waiting to be awakened. It is reported that Kundalini awakening results in deep meditation, enlightenment and bliss. This awakening involves the Kundalini physically moving up the central channel to reside within the Sahasrara Chakra above the head. This movement of Kundalini is felt by the presence of a cool or, in the case of imbalance, a warm breeze across the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet. Many systems of yoga focus on the awakening of Kundalini through meditation, pranayama breathing, the practice of asana and chanting of mantras. Spiritual masters, guruji’s and people with constant practice of yoga systems having kundalini awakened possess heightened telepathic ability.

In science, speaking of the third eye, there is a small cone-shaped gland at the back of our brain, located exactly at the top of the spinal cord called ‘Pineal Gland’, which in Hindu traditions is called as the extra-sensory third ‘eye’ through which perception of the world is not limited to the physical senses. It has recently been discovered that micro-Crystals are forming in our pineal gland. The presence of these Crystals was discovered by Professor Sidney B. Lang, of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, and Drs. Simon Baconnier and Rene de Seze of the National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks in France. A new form of biomineralization has been studied in the pineal gland of the human brain. Inside the pineal gland are calcite microcrystals consisting of calcium, carbon and oxygen that produce bioluminescense, a “cold” light that produces light without heat, ranging in the blue-green light spectrum. These calcite microcrystals are said to have their own piezoelectric effect that is responsive to electromagnetic energies outside the physical body and can also produce its own electromagnetic energy.

The pineal gland has often been called the true master gland and is the thought transmitter. Positive action flows through the pineal doorway, negative action flows through the pituitary. Both act in unison to balance all mental activities. According to Lang et al. (2002), every emotion you feel, every moment of joy and fear, produces a chemical enzyme in your body. Each enzyme passes to the pineal. The pineal is the system of entry into the Divine Mind. It is a complex crystalline computer that screens frequencies. So some thoughts and feelings become springboards; others become obstructions. Doubt is one blockage that prevents the manifestation of our desires. Doubt creates a bio-chemical reaction, which activates a neuron carrier in the brain that flows from the pituitary gland to the pineal and blocks the gateway to the Divine Mind. This becomes the forgotten information. The activation of the microcrystals in our pineal gland is advancing us toward this multi-dimensionality. It is the next step in our evolution.

The Cerebral Cortex is where thinking, logic, deduction, evaluation, short term memory etc. takes place. It also controls the function of the five physical senses and extremity movement. It is the information gatherer for the various levels of consciousness. This area constantly interferes with telepathic communication and must be stilled in order to receive instruction through the super-conscious (higher) mind. As a result, if we ‘still’ the cerebral cortex the third eye gets activated, where the thoughtless form creates a pathway to enter into the ‘Divine Mind’ through the pineal. Thus, we can use telepathy to connect with the higher dimensions of consciousness.

Hi,

This is the 3rd eye exercise I practice for 20 minutes each day.

Quote:
There is the concept of the Black and Gold Serpents. The Black Serpent rises through the lunar pathway on the left side of the djed and is connected with the Darkness of the Void or the creatrix of all creation. The Gold Serpent rises through the solar pathway on the right side of the djed and is connected with light. In a sense the Two Serpents are alchemically opposites and when you bring two opposites together within an alchemical container there is the possibility of immense energy.

In this preliminary training you will be causing the energy of sekhem to split into two different streams of energy. As the life-force rises up the djed it takes two different yet parallel paths. The Black Serpent rises from the left side at the base of the djed while the Gold Serpent rises from the right side of the djed, also from the base. However, as they continue to rise up the djed toward the head, they cross over each other as they enter the chakras.

Thus the Gold Serpent crosses over to the left side of the djed as it enters the sexual chakra and the Black Serpent crosses over to the right. As they climb further up the djed, the Gold Serpent crosses back over to the right side as it enters the solar plexus and the Black Serpent crosses back over to the left.

Next, the Gold Serpent crosses to the left side as it enters the heart and the Black Serpent crosses over to the right side. As they enter the throat chakra, the Gold Serpent returns to the right side of the djed and the Black Serpent returns to the left side. Then they climb to the crown chakra where the Gold Serpent crosses to the left side of the djed and the Black Serpent crosses over to the right side.

Finally, they meet at the center of the head with the Gold Serpent hovering on the right side while the Black Serpent hovers on the left side. Both of them face each other with the pineal and the pituitary glands sitting between them. The purpose of this exercise is just to familiarize you with the phenomenon of rising both serpents up the djed and into the head.

To do the exercise, sit comfortably and close your eyes. Place the focus of your attention, in other words, the alchemical container of your awareness, on your pelvic floor. Find a rhythm that is pleasurable for you and breath deeply (though comfortably) drawing the breath into the belly. As you inhale, let the lower abdomen expand, and as you exhale pull in the lower abdomen.

As you inhale, imagine the energy of your breath reaching down into every nook and cranny of your pelvis. The reason for this is that you are causing sekhem to stir, and sekhem, or your life-force, is cradled in the pelvic area. As you exhale, keep your focus on the pelvis. This will cause the energy of the sekhem to build or intensify in the pelvic area. Continue this for a couple of minutes or so.

After a few minutes of building the energy in the pelvis, you are ready for the next phase. On the inhales, attention is still in the pelvis but on the exhales shift your attention into the base of the djed. Through the power of intention (will) imagine the Two Serpents being charged with the energy of the breath. As you continue to exhale, send the energy up through the two pathways of the serpents. Imagine them as clearly in your mind as possible sensing them crossing each other at each of the chakras and finally ending in the center of the head.

Continue the practice until you have a clear sense of the two serpent-like energies running up the spine and into the head. Allow yourself to sense the movement of the life-force up these two pathways as the serpents "writhe" in response to your breath. Sense the subtle energies that are generated within the brain as a result of this practice.

The overall effect of drawing up earth's energy from below and pulling in the sky's energy from above and then focusing those combined and integrated energies upon the 3rd eye is quite amazing in my view.

Um, so simple, you close your eyes and focus...'up there'.
If and when you begin to see things, anything...
it helps to keep the eyeballs still...find your own way...
always with clean hands, palms, or fingers.

Mental activity is another subject.
Devotion is another subject.
Desire is another subject.
Grace is another subject.
Sincerity is another subject.
Even what is hidden behind the breath is another subject,
according to the thread's title that drew me in.

But, the above is the 3rd eye technique in a nutshell...
4 decades and wowsa...I could not tell you all that is inside,
another subject....

Added:
Hmm... I am wrong...devotion, Grace, sincerity, mental activity ARE on topic...what was I thinking.

Hi John32241

Yea the third eye exercise that you are practicing is similar to Kundalini awakening. The concepts are the same only the terms are different.

'Lord Shiva’ known as Tryambaka Deva, means ‘three-eyed Lord’ often depicted as having three eyes. His right and left eyes are the sun (Shiva-Yang) and moon (Shakti-Yin) respectively, which represents His activities in the physical world while His third eye is the eye of wisdom.

Amongst the attributes of the Chakras we meet two important symbols: Shiva (Consciousness) and Shakti (Energy). SHIVA symbolises consciousness, the masculine principle. SHAKTI symbolises the feminine principle, the activating power and energy.

Whenever a power becomes active, and wherever energy exists, Shakti is working. Other terms for these primal principles are PURUSHA and PRAKRITI; Purusha is consciousness and Prakriti is nature. Lord Shiva is generally portrayed holding a trident, which represents the trinity of Ishwara (Third eye), Purusha (Shiva) and Prakriti (Shakti).

Ishwara is the omnipresent, eternal, formless divine principle; Purusha is the Atma and Prakriti is the manifestation, nature. An electric light can be used to explain their relationship. The electric current, which is the source of the light, is Ishwara; the light is Purusha, and the object that is illuminated is Prakriti.

SHAKTI (or Prakriti) means energy, power, movement, change, nature. It is the maternal principle – the provider, abundance. In the human as well as in the animal kingdom the mother offers nourishment, warmth and security. There is no greater love than the love of a mother. The mother carries and nourishes the child in her own body. When it is born she provides it with mother’s milk and raises it at the sacrifice of her own self until it becomes self-reliant.

SHIVA (or Purusha), on the other hand, is pure consciousness – the unchanging, unlimited and unswayable observer. Purusha has no desires whatsoever; these are inherent only in Prakriti. Purusha is the empty, clear screen onto which Prakriti projects her colourful film.

Shiva and Shakti are manifestations of the all-in-one divine consciousness - different sides of the same coin. In many pictures these two primal powers are each depicted as being one half of the same image; one side female and one side male. The left side is the Divine Mother, Parvati, the “feminine” energy, and the right side represents Shiva, the “masculine” consciousness.

Through the splitting of the primordial principle at the advent of creation the duality within our lives came into being, together with a strong force that is constantly striving to re-unite with the other part.

Only when Shiva and Shakti combine can action, movement and creation arise. Until energy is impregnated with consciousness it is ignorant, disordered, aimless and “blind”. Energy alone can produce nothing; consciousness bestows upon it content, form and direction. Conversely, consciousness without energy is dormant power, sleeping energy, and on its own is unable to be the cause of anything. Just as Prakriti without Purusha is unable to act, and vice versa, Purusha without Prakriti is also incapable of creating anything.

The meaning of Shiva and Shakti is occasionally misunderstood when Shiva and Shakti are looked upon as “man” and “woman” and their union is regarded as a sexual relationship. Sexuality is something completely natural, and misunderstanding arises only when sexuality and spirituality are mixed.
• Sexuality is the union of man and woman
• Spirituality is the union of the human and the divine consciousness.

Shiva and Shakti exist within each of us as the masculine and feminine principles. This has an effect on the physical level – it is the cause of sexual attraction. Within man there exists a tendency towards the feminine qualities, and within woman a tendency towards the masculine. Through this the masculine consciousness is attracted by the feminine and vice versa. If both are in balance there is no sexual attraction. But if a tendency for the masculine predominates in man, or the feminine in woman, this results in a preference for a homosexual partner.

Shiva resides in the Sahasrara Chakra and Shakti in the Muladhara Chakra. When Prakriti and Purusha unite in the Sahasrara Chakra, knowledge, knower and the object of knowledge become one. Once we have experienced this no desires remain within us because we realise unequivocally that everything we have ever yearned for is carried within us. In this state of absolute consciousness there are no polarities and therefore no more sorrows; there is only everlasting joy, unconditional love, unlimited compassion and total understanding for all living beings.

For as long as consciousness is connected to the physical body it is unable to remain constantly in the Sahasrara Chakra and so returns to the residence of the Atma in the Heart Centre (Anahata Chakra). A realised person always thinks, feels and acts from the heart. Embedded in eternal love and eternal happiness, that person is always conscious of the immortal Atma, the ocean of bliss, and their consciousness is forever connected to the divine consciousness.
• Shakti is the motherly love of God that surrounds us with warmth, caring and protection.
• Shiva is the paternal love of God that gives us consciousness, clarity and knowledge.

ISHWARA, the third eye (also known as the inner eye) is a mystical and esoteric concept referring to a speculative invisible eye which provides perception beyond ordinary sight. In certain dharmic spiritual traditions such as Hinduism, the third eye refers to the ajna, or brow, chakra. In Theosophy it is related to the pineal gland. The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. In New Age spirituality, the third eye often symbolizes a state of enlightenment or the evocation of mental images having deeply personal spiritual or psychological significance. The third eye is often associated with religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras and auras, precognition, and out-of-body experiences. People who are claimed to have the capacity to utilize their third eyes are sometimes known as seers.

Vaidehi

I believe the kundalini energy can start anywhere in the body. For me it started mostly in my throat. Then it blew out my heart. In any case what i have found is once that starts it begins to work its way through out the body. Through the cells, the chakras, everything. The good thing about it is at some point it becomes effortless. Not that techniques dont help. They do.

For me i respond to harmonics well. So when i meditate i utilize one that activates the third eye since thats my weakest area. And since my heart keeps me more centered and has a positive effect on all of them i use harmonics on that one to once in a while. Even though that one seems my strong point.

Ths shakti eats away, dissolves, and works its way through the system from its jjoy from what i have seen. Its like a wrecking ball for obstructions. Lol

Meditation is the journey of our consciousness from Body to Mind, Mind to Intellect, Intellect to Self and Beyond. Meditation awakens Kundalini.

Lol
There are many minor Chakras besides the seven major ones and these are located throughout the body, even in the feet.

The usual progression of Energy for me now is Muladhara down the inside of both thighs to the knees, then up to the Anahata where it lingers for a few minutes, then up to Vishuddhi causing a slight choking sensation, then branching off across my shoulder blades, down both arms and into my hands, with some of it going straight up and into my brow Chakra, illuminating my whole skull-space.

Some of you may/not be aware of the Gayatri Mantra which goes like this:

Om...Bhur...Bhuvah...Swah...Tat....Savitur...Varen yam...

Now, each of the first 4 are what is known as 'Bija' (seed) mantras within themselves, excluding the 'Om'.

They correspond to all different 'Lokas' or psychic locations of the chakras in the astral body.

Bhur- is the 'underworld' and that is Mooladhara and below, where the form of Prana called Apana (impurity) resides and circulates within all these lower Chakras.

Bhuvah - is from Mooladhara to Solar Plexus Chakras, where we live and exist for most of our conscious lives and is associated with this location in the etheric body.

Swah - is the root form of 'to give' or to surrender and this is the act of giving and receiving love and to share it with others. Truth, love and honesty with good communication comes into it, so it covers the area from the Heart (Anahata) up to but not including the brow Chakra. it ends at Rudra Granthi.

(All these locations and energy flows are blocked by three knots and whether they are open or not is indicative of where the energy flows all seem to 'start' and 'stop' from but anyway)...

Tat - simply means 'That' - it is the realisation of the unity with all existence which starts at the Ajna Chakra, includes the Bindu Chakra, way out and through the Sahasrara Chakra and into the higher Chakras (there are two beyond the Sahasrara Chakra).

When you chant the Gayatri Mantra (the mantra to the Sun-God from the Rig Veda) you are acknowledging the spin, frequency and energy of each chakra as you're doing it.

Yes, the Shakti always follows the 'path of the least resistance' I have found as well and depending on the nature of the psychic block, she can be a wrecking ball to all the minor blocks She has to storm through while working Her way around the big ones....like an electric current finding the quickest path to an earth source, but in reverse.

Aum Namah Shivaya
