Depends...I have been there for many people at the passing stage.
When you say "holding on for others" can you clarify a little?
Is the person waiting for someone to come? Waiting for someone to be ready to let them pass? or Does the person crossing over have unfinished business with others?
Or are you asking if there is a way for the ill person to just let go of their earthly self in peace?

A feeling of obligation maybe? To stick around longer to appease other peoples wants and needs rather than your own? Other people don't want to say goodbye, so you hang on for them? I interpreted your question this way. Very good question btw.

All of the above.
Mostly that the ill person is ready but others aren't ready for them to go so they feel obligated.

Tell them to go, that they don't need to hold on. They can do more to help on the other side.
