The artist has to interpret the card's meaning and depict that in the artwork... if there is artwork. Different artists will focus on different parts of the card's meaning. I think that has an influence on how the same card is read in different decks.

There are decks that do not have any picture other than a uniform background and a few words and numbers to represent which card it is. A friend of mine makes decks like this for gaming. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anait...296057?sk=info

You can still do readings with them though, if you remember the traditional meanings of the cards.

you hit the point of my question Arive nan.
there is a traditional meaning, so where do it stand when looking at different decks that do not look the same? meaning same card number but different looks. and as you said, the art work influence the meaning. and if i go back to my original example. if the swords of the 10 of swords are stub in the body or just stub on the ground around the body the feeling is not the same.

is there a place to traditional meaning when working with modern tarot decks that do not follow the traditional images?

for myself, i believe in intuitive reading, still there is much knowledge and truth in the traditional meaning of the cards, and i would like to give it up though very often it just don't fit to the imagery.

I suppose my fascination with Sacred Circle is in the layering. The "people" in the cards are real people and the backgrounds are "real" places of archeological significance, so each has it's own legends/mythologies to tell. For instance, the Queen of Cups is shown as the Grail Maiden which lets you into all the mythology around the Holy Grail. The background is Glastonbury Tor which lets you into the Arthurian legends and tales of the fae. Animals, birds, insects, flowers, fruit, herbs - all add a layer for interpretation.
To me [and I know that this is my "thing" !] , the Sacred Circle cards really do look like doorways.
