I stumbled across an article that follows my explanation.
Synopsis: Erik Rune Medhus killed himself at the age of 20. He struggled for a while with depression. He's been contacting his family through dreams, visitations and channeling.
Erik's First Visits {channelingerik.com/eriks-first-visits/} is an account of Erik visiting his Father, Grandfather, and a Family Friend.
But is Erik a Spirit Guide? Yes. In my opinion he is.
Quote:
"Spirit guide" is a term used by the Western tradition of Spiritualist Churches, mediums, and psychics to describe an entity that remains a disincarnate spirit in order to act as a guide or protector to a living incarnated human being.

According to the above definition he is. So I can utilize this account to help explain thoughts on contacting our guides.
He visits three individuals leaving his mother to question why (at the time) she did not receive a visit. At the end of that article she says, "All of these dream visitations were of great comfort to my family and me although I wondered selfishly why he had not appeared to me, his own mother. In retrospect I believe I was too besieged by grief to open my mind and heart to him. But that would soon change."
This reenforces my belief that the communication between our guides is based on a number of things. The most important aspect is being open and receptive.
I can go on and on for sometime about this.
But essentially there is a level of trust that is necessary for successful communication as well.
