I have spent several years working on my garden, trying to make it a more faery friendly space and it's finally starting to mature and feel a bit more natural.

I was walking around today, pulling weeds and removing dead leaves when in my peripheral vision I saw a figure, shorter than me, but by no means your stereotypical faery - maybe 4ft tall, and kind of chunky - maybe a gnome / dwarf? It dissapeared in an instant, but I saw enough to know it was dressed in brown. It felt like a benevolent being.

I have encountered small fae before, as well as a very tall green being - but never anything like this one. Has anyone ever encountered anything similar?

Similar yes but not as vivid as your experience.

I have an elemental energy that stays with me in my apartment. I have telepathically spoken with her. One day that energy appeared in my freezer as a glowing light. I closed the freezer and re-opened the door an it was still there. It was kind of startling for me.

Elemental energies do exist around us. It will eventually be accepted.

I don't think there is a 'stereotypical fairy' just as there is no stereotypical animal or plant or anything else. There is a vast array of beings out there, both physical and elemental, maybe some are more common than others, or are more easily seen than others, but I don't think they can be generalised too much

If you see it again, you could perhaps ask it what it calls itself.

I could be a land wight or genius loci, but those are human words for nonhuman beings who might call themselves something different.
