That’s good you’ve kicked the addictive patterns. Without those addictive tendencies you can gain more control over your life and focus differently.

I think during my partners drinking periods, his environment close to home wasn’t very pleasurable, so turning to drink and social gatherings was a way to build a more pleasurable life. It fills the pleasure void I imagine. When your home life is miserable or your trauma is holding things in and down and you don’t want to look at such things, it’s easy to turn to something that is a quick fix..

I think our brains are wired for pleasure, but once addiction takes hold, there is the tendency, to over ride the natural pleasure response, which if I’m correct is a more slow release process. Drugs and alcohol tend to change the way the brain responds to pleasure.

Maybe the spiritual path has allowed you develop a more diverse interests that provide more meaning to your life. I think once you develop an awareness that life is not always meant to be pleasurable and you can be more present with the transient nature of problems, rather than fill up with pleasurable addictions that suppress or make problems go away.

My partner is like you now..mostly a glass of wine at occasions a few times a year.

The reason the convo came up about this with him, was my older brother left his bottle if wine here, which was three quarters full, so I think that moment of seeing more than one glass activated his response. He could see that potentially there was a drink a night for a few nights, I think perhaps he was trying to make it ok in his own mind and some where in him was ‘protecting’ that potential.

Me on the other hand, have zero interest in it. I’ve never been a big drinker even when younger. A few occasions but not ongoing like a lot of people. I get more pleasure from a healthful plate of food..

I think especially for spirituality, don't touch any intoxicants. Eat healthy, sleep properly, and take it from there. It's for the best.
