As I see it we probably all have imbalances, whether we want to admit it or not. If we are not aware of what we project from ourselves, then the possibility is that we might project one of our imbalances, which then attracts a situation which we are not in balance with. This can give us a chance to deal with these imbalances if we embrace the struggle. Others simply project to escape their imbalances, this gives them an opportunity to attract things they are in balance with - though if they do not at some point deal with their imbalances in a healthy way, they might surface during a projection in a way where they might not recognize their actions as their own.
If you do not feel ready to project, then search yourself to find out why. Deal with what you find in a healthy Earth grounded way. There is nothing Earth cannot teach you about your own existence

Yep, You meet what you attract has been pointed out before in old threads - numbers of times.
Better be aware what you are projecting/what you are putting out
out there. As you go around the astral zones, what you readily see correspond to what you are projecting.
Also, unresolved issues and fears are gonna show in the subconscious state - "can't help it" as anybody would say.
The mind can play so much more tricks than the tricks of the eyes could come up with,
so just be aware what you are also manifesting yourself.

Remembering Astral Explorer's point on meeting entities/spirits,
How they read you like a book just at the sight or feel of you - fears and all.

And on seeing your vulnerabilities, especially your worse ones, is where they'll likely gonna start off.
I should think it's the norm for them to just reflect back whatever they pick up at a projecting individual apart from having fun in scaring anybody off.

A few years ago, I simply started telling/asking the odd/even scary entities I meet to transform and show me their lovely awesome form or simply whatever is agreeable in my mind which I send to what I'm dealing with instead of thinking in fear. It works.

That is great. I am glad it has worked for you. Being afraid can attract awful things whether it is real or not.
