The soul is a pattern that persists after death that is in essence "you". It's supposed to be mostly immutable.
The spirit is a lot harder to define, books have been written about it, think tao te ching.
1) Scientifically, "spirit" is the golden mean, or golden ratio. 1.6180
2) Energetically it is a thread that exists in everything and through everything that is undying and also transcends/exits beyond everything.
3) In consciousness it is the unseen principle upon which form is generated
4) In every day experience, the closest thing to it people experience is true intuition. Mainly talking about those pure moments that only happen very rarely in life.
What you see of spirit is determined by the relativistic position of everything your looking at. (well if your lucky enough to ever see it)
Quote:
The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao;
The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
The Nameless is the origin of Heaven and Earth;
The Named is the mother of all things.
......
There was something undifferentiated and yet complete,
Which existed before Heaven and Earth.
Soundless and formless it depends on nothing and does not change.
It operates everywhere and is free from danger.
It may be considered the mother of the universe.
I do not know its name; I call it Tao.
......
All things in the world come from being.
And being comes from non-being. (form comes from formlessness)?
Tao Te Ching

In practice though I think everyone has to determine what "spirit" means to them personally on their own path.

Spirit-2 = physical/energy i.e. fermions, bosons or any aggrgate thereof.
Soul = biological and that is a specific collective pattern of interrelating spirit-2's that have a synergetic effect and may lead to accessing of metaphysical-1, mind/intellect/concepts { spirit-of-intent aka spirit-1 } }
Spirit-3 is metaphysical-3, gravity...mass-attractive
Spirit-4 is metaphysical-4, dark energy...mass-disperseive{?}.

The terms soul and spirit have been discussed at length throughout philosophy, literature, and religion. Even scientists have ventured remarks about the soul. Often, though, soul and spirit are interpreted to mean the same thing and end up being used interchangeably.

OF courses not, as that appears to me to be irrational, illogical and lacks common sense.
We do not podsess a soul we are a soul/biological that is conscious and the humans are most complex organism or entity of Universe-- barring ideas of one that which includes one or more humans ---- we know of.
Woman being more complex than man. imho

I always think of a "Soul" as being the enlivened Being on any dimension which is made up of sensation, emotion, mental abilities, yet beyond mere 'ego' and very much more in tune with Spirit than our ego selves. I sense that the Soul is best contacted through Heart based energies.
I always think of "Spirit" as being the eternal source of ourselves as Beings.

Soul is the consciousness within us that is a portion of our Higher Self while spirit is our etheric body and they are both eternal

At the end of the day, soul and spirit are just words. Personally I prefer to use the word mind as it carries less religious connotations. It's the mind that carries on existing after the physical body has ceased to be.
