Newly-Awakened Empath

Hi everyone,

After a great deal of learning and energy work, I've realized that I am an empath, with strong abilities. The awakening process has been bumpy, to say the least, but at least now I understand why I have always been able to "read" emotions, and pick up on them, among other things! Does anyone have any advice for a newly-awakened empath, especially on grounding? Thanks!

Hello, Saragh

Congratulations on your newly awakened ability! I am also a sensitive empath.

For me, grounding is extremely important because I easily pick up others' negative emotions or illnesses and take them on as my own. I recommend giving yourself time every day for solitude and contemplation. It is also a good idea to start meditation if you have not already done so.

Another grounding technique someone has suggested to me is to imagine when you bathe that you are washing away the negative feelings you've picked up throughout the day. I've also read somewhere that sea salt baths can be very grounding as well.

I hope this is helpful! :)

How can I know for sure if I am an empath ? - for some reason during the last few years, I felt I could "read" people's feelings and more oddly, when I receive an email from a friend... it seems like when I read their mail, their voice is reading their letter for me and enabling me to feel what they felt at the time.of writing.

I just dont know if I am or not. However, I have been seeing the word "empath/y" alot.

Thanks very much! I'll give that a try, with the sea salts. I discovered a meditation video too, for grounding, that seems helpful.

Candlelight, I came to the realization after doing quite a bit of reading on the subject, and then checking in with my spirit guides, and my higher self. Basically, I "felt it out." Also, after having a discussion with my aunt, I realized that this ability seems to run in my family; my mother and aunt are both highly sensitive, and I believe my mother might also be an empath, though she doesn't like to talk about it! ;) She's told me that she "picks up on energy" in a room, (as I also do) and she also intuitively senses when I'm in distress, even though we live miles apart. Beyond "mother's intuition." For example, when I was struggling financially, and needed something as basic as toothpaste, she sent some! Though we hadn't discussed it, and I hadn't told her I was struggling- I didn't want to worry her. I should've known better!

I relate to what you say also, about being able to "hear" someone's voice, and feel their energy when you read their letter. The same thing happens to me. Acknowledging that the "voices" are how I pick up on others' emotions was hard for me to grasp at first. When I started awakening, I had a lot of fear at first that I was mentally ill. There is a lot of stigma in my upbringing about "hearing voices," because my father was mentally ill. So that was an issue I had to grapple with, before I could fully realize my own abilities. I believe that Empaths are meant to help others, as healers. I just need to learn how to "bookmark", as my mom says, and how to cleanse myself of negative energies.

^Absolutely the most important thing you can do for yourself as an empath, in my opinion. Before I knew what I was, I had been diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression. While it's not the case for everyone, for me it ended up being my abilities bringing me down, and not a mental health problem. After some research and dropping the medications- meditation and time alone helped tremendously. I don't know if I could make it without those two things everyday.

Good luck to you, my friend! Maybe you could do a couple updates on your progress? I'm still pretty new at all of this too, and I'm sure I have something I could learn from you.

Interesting you say that, peaches. While I've never been prescribed with medicine, I have been diagnosed with a depressive disorder in the past. I've realized however, that since I came to terms with my abilities I'm better able to identity my emotions, and pinpoint whether or not they're truly MY issues, or feelings I'm picking up on from others. When I'm feeling whatever I'm feeling it's becoming easier to 'ride the wave,' and then let it go too. I've taken on those suggestions for grounding and shielding, and it's helping a lot. Raising my vibration helps out a lot too. There are lots of videos on raising your vibration, using binary tones. Keeping mentally active and creative is also therapeutic too. And I love to sing while I'm painting, for example. It always uplifts me!

Hm, seems like I just discovered I am an empath. Thanks for putting it out there, Saragh. I grew up being an emo kid and pretty much felt the world's pain and felt so responsible for it all. I ended up shutting the world out and spending a lot of time reading, sewing, painting, spending time with nature and animals, and listening to music. I am much more in control of how I intercept other people's emotions and draw the line when I need some time out from society to replenish or do something I love do raise my vibration levels. Self-awareness is key :) I've also recently started using crystals for grounding (pyrite).

Oh, my. How wonderful that you said that! I was having a particularly hard time 'riding the wave' today. Everyone at work has been so stressed, and my best friend has been having a rough go of it. I didn't think I could find my center through all the emotions. But sure enough, raising my vibrations helped tremendously. I'll definitely have to keep it in mind for myself and comrades in the future! Thanks!
