How to have perfect concentration on the perfect thing? Great question, Sg, and Adyashanti describes it well.

The way I say it is, there are two parts to becoming aware in what is perfect (which has no real definition) :

* Noticing your familiar mind activity and letting it go in the moment - Adyshanti calls it Relaxing.

* Giving your attention into the silent aware presence that is always here, within and all around you, which is your true nature.

Well you know me Xan, I am proudly so , as thick as two point blank with an IQ of somwhere in the region of minus something or other.

So here we go ... True meditation implies the existence of false meditation. and as you may also know, i am from something of the school of "Whatever works best for you"... And thus I read on to find the proponent of True Meditation saying

The implication may be there, Neville... but do we really want to miss the point of the teaching by focusing on definitions, comparisons and ideas?

True meditation takes us beyond that sort of mental involvement and that's what makes it 'true'.

I want to say this about the controversial word "true" in the sense of meditation.

This is not about evaluation or superiority in any way, but acknowledging there is something purely and absolutely true beyond and hidden within this complex relative world.

True meditation is how to know for oneself our true nature beyond the surface conditioned identity... how to become aware in true being.

I'll just jump in and reply to Silvergirl here.

Meditation begun and fitted into life needs an outside reason to sustain it. Eventually meditation becomes an end in itself and a deepening of controls becomes the sustaining factor. At some point it all drops away... True?

The deepening of controls becoming the sustaining factor is about how we learn to move awareness around and refine the interaction between intent and feeling. Being aware and what one can be aware of. This then is the Meditation having it's own requirements in and of inself outside of the life lived... even though the effects are felt in life. So the practise of meditation becomes the reason for meditation. As the possible interactions between intent and feeling thin out then the only place left is the stillness... at least in respect of the physical body.

That said it's ongoing for me and it may very well be that the stillness, while being an end of sorts, is also a beginning. I'm still too heavy... I need to spend some time lightening up my habits.

Xan: This issue I believe people are having with the word 'True' is that meditation can accomplish so many different things which so many different goals in mind. The goal of goal-lessness is but one of many, specifically it is the ultimate goal of the undirected internal meditation. You could say this is the ultimate version of several meditations, including Zen, Yogic, Divine Consciousness/Godhead, Nothingness, Taoist and probably several others I can't think of off the top of my head.

What about Visualization meditations? Energy Awareness meditations? Martial Arts meditations? Expanding meditations? Focal meditations? Spirit meditations? and more.
