Looked it up to be sure:
Wiktionary says: ob means towards, and nox means harm.
So, now we got three different translations from 3 sources.
To me, nox can have more than one meaning, and the idea it could be interpreted as smell still makes sense. Nox is the bases of the word noxious (as in a noxious gas) - i.e. bad smelling gas. They didn't know what it was but they knew what it smelt like. Always the concept is based on the experience so you have to backtrack to the original experience to find the concept.
So, I'm still going with nox meaning a bad smell. Can't be 100% sure but it's the most likely so far.
As for ob, meanings of prepositions change depending on the object they're preceding, so in this case ob could still mean bad (or negative). Would have to research it as different places give it different meanings. If ob in this case does mean "toward" then the translation would be "towards a bad smell".
