Online readings?

I am wondering if online, or over email readings are always hoaxes?
I would love to do an internet reading, but I do not want to waste my time on something that is not real. Is in person the route to go?

A 'reading' may be nothing more than an auric/psychic reading whose value may be questionable - it may simply tell you about you from the information learned from you. It may be peppered with suggestions or 'advice' from someone you don't know and who doesn't know you. Is that what you'd like?

If you think you're getting a medium then my suggestion is to find out what the medium provides. An evidential medium might be able to link to someone you know 'in spirit' or someone who knows you. Perhaps that is what you want?

If you're not sure then pay your money, take your chance, and see what comes. At worst it may be nonsense, at best it may help you with what you're seeking.

Between those extremes might give you some ideas where you'd like to go next.
