Honza,

Precisely, and therein lies the problem. Orthodoxy has the audacity to define that which can not be defined…..God. It attempts to limit that which is unlimited. A control mechanism to simplify the masses and amounts to an agreement of self delusion. Fall in line or be excommunicated, burned at stake or be labeled a heretic……

Therein I think lies the greatest misunderstanding.

A mystic experience is instantly connected to some God figure and St.Francis of Assissi or St.Therese of Avalon for instance. But, all those who report the same tremendous mystic experiences in life - for example - Aldous Huxley, Maurice Bucke, Goethe, Emerson, Alan Watts and many others, never reported any god presence.
The mental attributes or levels of understanding in nature are similar to music, there are many notes, tones, octaves and vibrations which are needed to even access the hidden structures within.

The best way to roughly see how a mystic experience takes place is to think of a whale springing out of the ocean, for a moment - it (the whale) enters a new element - one finer that the normal, but basically of the same stuff.

We humans, animals, plants, and mineral are a tremendous fundament for all sorts of abilities. Our capabilities of invention and adaption know no bounds, these facilities all being immediately connected to the thing we call mind.

Mind is all there is.

I agree - no seeking 'union with God' need occur.
Maybe someone just wants to know deeper truths of the Universe and all of creation?
They could be an atheist and remain one, imo.

Yes I wondered about that 'seek union with the absolute' as well. But to be fair the definition of mystic is broader in scope than just that.

(COMMENT)
Oddly enough, there are valid elements expressed by each of the contributors.

Mysticism has a magical component to it. And the key to that component is "harmony with the universe."

Whether or not the individual mystic has within its faith a belief in the Supreme Being, the concept of a Great Architect (The Creator of the universe), or any number task oriented deities (a Divine Entity) it is about the journey into the supernatural (metaphysics). And that is a very common theme; as anyone can see here. There is no single definition that fits every faith-based construct.

Don't say that in the Non-duality section ...it is a basic belief there The Absolute and God are not the same. :)

Maybe I should add, as a byline, that at the moment I experienced my reported mystical experience I wasn't 'on my knees seeking god' I was in the office working quite normally.
Maybe the experience did follow some sort of line - but all the experiences which followed in my life were never the result of 'seeking' but were quite spontaneous.
